THE HISTORY

The Ardnablane development is set within the grounds of Ault Wharrie, a Victorian mansion, built in 1900 by Rowntree and Walton for J B Stewart, a local librarian.

The house was purchased by the Grand Lodge of Scotland and opened in 1951 by the then Princess Royal when it became the first Scottish Masonic Home, specialising in care of the elderly.

Ardnablane was purpose built in 1969 to cater for further expansion and when fully operational catered for 58 residents. The home finally closed during 2005.

The architects at Ault Wharrie were also involved with such notable buildings such as Miss Cranston's tea rooms and Charing Cross Mansions in Glasgow.
